Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from An Exposition of the Causes and Character of the Late War

Thus, were the United States, in a season ofreputed peaee, involved in the evils efa state of war'; and thus was the American ?ag annoyed by a nation still professing to cherish the sentiments of mutual friendship and respect, which had been recently vouched, by the faith of a solemn treaty. But the American government even yet abstained from vindicat iug its rights, and from avenging its wrongs, by an appeal to arms. 1l\\ insensibility to those wrongs; nor a dread of British power; nor a subserviency that prevailed, at that period, in the councils of the United States; but, under all trials, 'the American government abstained from the appeal to arms then as it has, repeatedly since done, in its collisions with France, as well as with Great Britain, from the purest love of peace, while peace could be rendered compatible with the honor and independence of the nation.
