Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from The Ancient Libraries of Canterbury and Dover: The Catalogues of the Libraries of Christ Church Priory and St. Augustine's Abbey at Canterbury and of St. Martin's Priory at Dover; Now ?rst Collected and Published With an Introduction and Identifications of the Extant Remains

There will be some, however, who do not desire to go very deeply into medieval bibliography, but who will be interested in books of some special class. They will seek to know, for instance, what classical authors were read or owned by the Canterbury monks. For these the task is not so heavy. The catalogues before us, notably that of St Augus tine's, are to a great extent subject - catalogues and a glance at the analytical table which follows this preface will show where groups of books of a given type may be found. They will need, it is true, to read through a considerable portion of the larger catalogue of Christ Church in order to make their survey complete: but, after all, the time spent in this will be very little longer than that required for looking up a series of references in an index.
