Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from The First Book of Caesar's Gallic War: C. Iuli Caesaris Belli Gallici Liber Primus, Ex Recensione Henrici Mensel Editus Brevibusque Adnotationibus Instructus Ab Henrico Preble

In pursuance of this idea I have reduced gram matical notes and references to the minimum, and have disregarded, as not helping the pupil to a better understanding of the situation immediately at hand, many matters which are generally dwelt upon. For instance, it seems to me that a mis translation or misconception of a classical passage is seldom caused by the reader's inability to elas szfy a subjunctive with cum or with ut, if he knows the meaning of the verb and notices its ten'se; or by inability to label an ablative as of means or of specification, if he recognizes the form as ablative at all and can connect it with the words with which it belongs.
