Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from The Abbot, Vol. 1

Introductory Epistle, were not deeply engaged With the Lost Cause of the ancient Church in Scotland. Now his sentiments, though not his actual judgment, were deeply engaged on the side of the Stuarts and of the J acobites, both during the Restoration and in the '15 and the '45. The Reformation did not show an aristocracy at feud with the populace, since both the nobles and the people, for different reasons, were united, on the whole, against the Church of Rome. We might have expected Scott to be stron g on the side of an old settled order, and to be heartily of the antiquarian party, whereas Presbyterianism is not an antiquarian religion. On the other hand, it wantonly destroyed the noblest monuments of mediaeval civi lisation, and the destruction is described in The Abbot.
