Mommsen, le modeste et savant Pantaleoni, nous donnait ses Origines romaines, et que l'nabile biographe de Savonarola ecrivait la vie de Machiavel. Les poetes les plus ages, tels que Prati et Regaldi, semblent avoir retrouve un regain dejeunesse au sein d'une patrie rajeunie elle-meme, et de graves pliilosophes pour qui l'heure du repos ne sonnera que sur le seuil d'une autre existence, parce qu'ils savent que la vie humaine est un combat, les Mamiani, les catara-lettieri, les Conti, les Fornari, sont restes dans l'arene et luttent avec une ardeur croissante pour la bonne cause de plus en plus menacee. C'est qu'en Italie, aussi bien qu'en France, les heretiques de la phil050phie et de la litterature sont de plus en plus nombreux, mais entre leurs oeuvres et celles des ortho doses la ditierence' est si grande au profit des derniers, qu'il est bien permis a la critique de garder son sang froid et de noter, en souriant, _des travers passagers, une petite epidemie morale dont le foyer principal est a Paris, Ou le charmant conteur qui ecrivit Dosia', et le sympathique auteur de Raymonde et de Madame Heurteloup, ont moins de lecteurs que tel collecteur vulgaire de documents humains.
