Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from The Cures of the Diseased: In Forraine Attempts of the English Nation, London, 1598

The kinship of letters and national enterprise has never been more happily illustrated than in the closing years of Elizabeth's reign. The world, grown more Spacious, was daily yielding fresh material for the writers whose works form the brightest diadem in our national treasury. Within ten years around the turn of the sixteenth century, a series of nautical adventures in close association with literary productions shewed that if the seaman's romantic life exercised a moulding force on literature, literature in its turn was not without its in?uence on seacraft.
