Les Archives du Depot de la guerre ont contribue pour une large part a l'edification de cette oeuvre. En 1854, la portion de la corres pondance de Napoleon conservee dans ces archives existait deja a l'etat de recueil et constituait une serie speciale comprenant soixante six volumes. Cette collection avait ete formee a partir de 1833 par les soins du general Pelet, alors directeur du Depot de la guerre.
