Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from Memories of My Youth, 1844-1865
My record of the events of the earlier years is based in part upon some home letters of my own which had for tunately escaped destruction, and in part upon my memory of conversations with my father. It is quite possible that for some portions of the narrative which were not covered by such letters or conversations, my memory may be at fault in regard to one detail or another, but I hope that the oversights will not be found important.
