Excerpt from The Friend, 1872, Vol. 45: A Religious and Literary Journal
We were also requested to intercede with thee for such intervention on thy part as may be right and lawful, to prevent the execution of the sentence of death recently passed upon the Kiowa chiefs, Satanta and Big Tree, by a court of the State of Texas. We are prompt ed to this by the antecedent history of the race; by our opposition to the sacrifice of hu man life, and by a conviction that the reten tion of said chiefs as prisoners will be far more effectual in securing the real objects of punish ment than will their execution.
We apprehend that if they are executed, the Kiowas will be very likely to retaliate, and that citizens of the United States will be the sufferers. We regard the delivery of said chiefs to the authorities of Texas, instead of their retention as prisoners of the United States, as of very questionable propriety, and therefore feel the more willing to press the subject upon thy most serious attention.
