HE following pages are a considerably expanded form of a lecture delivered before the Historical Research Society at Arch bishop's House, Westminster, on Monday, March 6, 1905. The original intention was simply to print the lecture as delivered; but in the course of revision for press, so much new matter presented itself that it was finally decided to change the form somewhat, and in this way it eventually assumed its present shape.
