Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from A Defence of the Eclipse of Faith: Being a Rejoinder to Professor Newman's Reply

In the two previous editions of this Defence, large citations - occupying twelve pages of the Ap pendix, pp. 205 - 217 - were given from Mr. New man's chapter on the Moral Perfection of Christ. This was done that I might not be again charged with not quoting enough, and lest it should be supposed that in the remarks I made on that chapter in Section 11, I had taken any advantage by insu lating sentences from their context. As these cita tions have often been complained of by readers as an unnecessary eyesore and offence to them, and as the sentiments of Mr. Newman expressed in the obnoxious chapter are only too notorious to the world, I have not thought it worth while to print them a third time, and they are therefore omitted in the present edition.
