In Longfellow's case this would surely include Hiawatha and his Minnehaha, Evangeline and Gabriel, perhaps also that kingly pair, Robert of Sicily and Olaf the Dane; certainly we could not spare dear Elsie, Who offers her young life so gladly for her prince, in the Legenda Aurea. Yet these favorites are almost wholly folk who never could have breathed our air, or understood a word of our speech.
