Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from Tales of the Maine Coast

That part of the saline shore of Fairport which lies between Jarvis's and Perkins's wharves, sweeping inward with a ?attened curve a scant eighth of a mile, was and is known as Oakum Bay. There were the sailor boarding houses, there the coasting and fishing schooners of the port were beached for submarine repairs, and there was the wide-doored boat-house where three or four old women sat in the sun spinning into yarn the oakum picked from ropes and cables that had been weathered by gales off Cape Horn, bleached in the fiery suns of India and the South Pacific or mildewed by the everlasting fogs of the Grand Banks. Were they endowed with power of speech, full many a tale of perilous adventure might these frag ments of rigging tell as they ignobly passed into their last estate of plebeian oakum to calk withal the seams of the humble craft of the port.
