I owe so many thanks to Sir Charles Watson's friends, whose names appear in this book, that to enumerate them is needless. But I must record my very Special debt to Mr. Walter W. Skeat, M. A., late When I was compelled by circumstances to abandon for a time the completion of this Memoir, Mr. Skeat came to my assistance, and, working with great Skill and much labour on the material with which I and Lady Watson, who has been an invalu able helper, supplied him, he wrote most of the later chapters of this book. I cannot sufficiently express my gratitude to him for his most valuable work.
