This memoir was originally published in July, 1906, along with W. T. Arnold's fragmentary studies on Roman Imperialism. It is now reprinted separately in response to numerous requests. It is written by his sister Mrs. Humphry Ward, and by Mr. C. E. Montague, for many years his colleague on the stafi of the Manchester Guardian. Mrs. Ward has written the portions which deal with her brother's early life and last years. Mr. Montague has contributed the account of Arnold's Manchester life and of his activity as a journalist. The index has been com piled by Miss Marjorie Cooper, ba. A bibliography of W. T. Arnold's writings has now been added.
