I enter perfecftly into the nature and confe quences of my attempt; and I advance-to it with a tremor that {hakes me to the inmoft fibre of my frame. Ifeel, that I engage in a bufinefs, in' itfelf molt ungracious, ' eotally wide of the courfe of prudent conduét; and I really think, the mof't compleatly adverfe that can be imax gine'd, to the natural turn and temper of my own mind. I know, that all parfimony is of a qua lity approaching to unkindnefs; and that (on fome perfon or other) every reform muf't Ope rate as a fort of punifhment Indeed the whole clafs of the fevere and refiriélive virtues, are 'at. What is worfe, there are very few of thofe virtues which are not capable of being imitated, and even out, done in many oftheir moft finkuig effects, by the worl't or V: ces. Malignity and envy will carve much; more deeply, and finilh much more lharply, in the work of retrenchment, than frugality amd provi dcnce. Ido not, therefore, wonder that gentle. Men have kept away from fuch a talk, as well from good nature as from prudence. Private feeling might, indeed, be overborn'e by legillative reafon.
