AN attempt to render more generally access ible and intelligible a work which is confessedly among the leading achievements of Henrik Ibsen scarcely needs excuse. Brand, though a very fascinating and suggestive poem, is also a distinctly complex and difficult one, and its difficulties are far from disclosing themselves completely at first sight. To those who best realise its suggestiveness and its complexity, the Introduction will scarcely seem unduly long, and it is hoped that the Notes may be of service even to students of the original, whose numbers it is the principal aim of this edition to increase. Those, however, who are quite new to Brand are advised to leave the Intro duction alone for the present (or to read at most the first section), and to return to it, if at all, after a rapid reading either of the original text or of the present translation.
