Excerpt from Notes Relative to the Late Transactions in the Marhatta Empire, Fort William, December 15, 1803: With an Appendix of Official Documents, and Also Six Engravings Illustrative of the Several Battles
The efforts of the governor general for that purpose were renewed at those seasons of difficulty and danger when the peishwah's inde pendence was controlled, and when the existence of his government was exposed to hazard, by the violence, rapacity, and ambition of his feudatory chieftains. Had the peishwah then assented to the moderate and salutary propositions which were offered to his acceptance, he could not have been exposed to the disastrous event by which (on the 25th of October 1802) he was expelled from Poonah, by which his authority was subverted, his person endangered, and his country and capital abandoned to devastation and plunder.
