When Mr. Kipling and his young wife arrived in Bombay, they were as signed to their government quarters on the Maidan. These quarters were on the sites of the ancient ramparts of the citadel of Bombay, which Sir Bartle Frere had ordered removed, and the Maidan was an open park stretching between the fort and the business por tion of the city.
