I iiatvia been honoured by the request of the Board ofmanagem'ent of this Institu tiou§'te deliver a course of lectures on the Printciplesof Chemical science; and, highly' as I am ?attered by the distinction which they have thus deemed it right to confer upon me, I should feel uneasy and embar rassed, were I not, on this occasion, and at the very threshold of my undertaking, to assure you that I have acquiesced in th wish, under the impression of considerable di?idence, and a somewhat painful anxiety; hoped and expected that a'task so arduous and iinportant, w61ild have de volved upon an ahler Professor, and would have beeri consigned to one of mbre elo quence and ability than the very hunible A 2.
