Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from Life and Letters of George Jacob Holyoake, Vol. 1
In British movements we seem to reproduce naturally our two-party system. It has been so in all the many causes with which I was associated with Holyoake for over forty years. It was noticeable in every case how Holyoake naturally seemed to become the champion of the section which was likely to suffer oppression or want of just consideration. Probably this instinctive spirit of knight-errantry was the key to a good deal in his career. He who sets out to fight all along the line for the weak will naturally encounter rough times. Holy oake did not escape. Even in the Co-operative movement he found himself often on the unpopular side, but he faced the music whether it played high or low, sweet or menacing.
