Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from The Church's Lessons for the Christian Year, Vol. 1: Being One Hundred and Twenty Sermons
My aim has been to make these Sermons a help to a better knowledge of the Bible. The passage chosen for the text is therefore always treated in its relation to its context. This has often involved, especially in the Old Testament Sermons, a brief exegetical introduction, in which I have generally endeavoured to recognize the results of the latest criticism of Biblical scholars, though not of higher critics. Care has also been taken, where needful, to point out the correct reading and accurate translation of the original text. The character of the Sermons and their brevity has, however, prevented any full discussion of such matters.
