Publisher's Synopsis

This is a biography of Norwood Harrison. He was a merchant mariner serving on R. & H. Green's Blackwall ships from 1851-1882. He rose in rank from Ordinary Seaman to Commordore of the Green's merchant fleet. In retirement he made the transition to steamships for a short time. This book not only presents the life of this master mariner, but also provides historical information about the life, tools, duties, and dangers of life at sea during the 19th Century. It explores the history of England's shipping trade with Australia during that formative era. The book is filled with illustrations, diagrams, photos, and maps which illuminate the life of this Master Mariner. The revised edition corrects errors; adds new information, photos, maps. Of particular interest is the addition of the only known photo of Commander Harrison in his retirement.
