Publisher's Synopsis
Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. While we get attached to the objects that make our lives easier, the progressive nature of our societies and scientific minds create a constant stream of new products that render older ones obsolete. Rotary phones, phone booths, typewriters, and vinyl records are all obsolete products of the not so distant past, but this book focuses on the products and services that are either already obsolete or in imminent danger of being improved and replaced. Included are the concept of product service life, disposabale products, and digital obsolescence. Specifically discussed are products such as the VHS, the brick-and-mortar book and video stores, the telephone land line, photographic film, encyclopedias, and others. Project Webster represents a new publishing paradigm, allowing disparate content sources to be curated into cohesive, relevant, and informative books. To date, this content has been curated from Wikipedia articles and images under Creative Commons licensing, although as Project Webster continues to increase in scope and dimension, more licensed and public domain content is being added. We believe books such as this represent a new and exciting lexicon in the sharing of human knowledge.
