Potentially the world's oldest profession, prostitution has a long history worldwide. The services of courtesans, hetaera, comfort women, grisette, and pallakae (and many other names by which prostitutes are known regionally and historically) were ubiquitous and colorful. Each culture has different attitudes towards prostitution, some hiding the services and others accepting prostitution into their everyday life. Prostitution is the practice of a prostitute who engages in promiscuous sexual services for money. This book sashays into Ancient Rome and Greece for a peak into the history of prostitution. Also included are the history of prostitution in Mesoamerica, the Ancient Near East and military prostitution.
