" And what is his reply? Keep the divine law? Had this been all, he might have stayed at home, and there had been no need of Christ's appearing upon earth. One Moses would have been quite enough. But the kingdom of Christ by no means attaches salvation to the condition of a perfect obedience, which it was impossible to render. Had this been so, it would have been the grave of our hopes, and a dungeon of despair for us all. No, it is grace that bears rule in Christ's kingdom. But although it is not a kingdom of the law, it is nevertheless a kingdom of sanctification, and it is in this quality, that the Baptist pourtrays it to us. For when the people inquired, saying, " What shall we do then? " He did not answer, " Lay your hands in your lap," or, " Do whatsoever you please," but gives them "the following directions: "He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do likewise." And when the publicans said unto him, " Master, what shall we do?" He said unto them, " Exact no more than is appointed you; " and to the soldiers, " Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely, and be content with your wages." What say you--is he preaching morality? As you hear, my friends. But do not mistake the deep purpose, which actuates him.
