IN the year of our Lord 11041% from the martyrdom of king Edmund 204, from the Norman conquest 37, and in the third year of the reign of king Henry I. the Cluniac monks were introduced at Thetford by Roger Bigot, who was a man of great power and reputation during the reigns of the two Williams. Upon review of his life he conceived that he had not duly discharged the honourable and important offices which were assigned him; therefore he formed a design to go on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, that he might make some atonement for his fins, and pay his tribute of adoration to the universal parent in that once holy city, and stand on the same ground where his Saviour stood., . When he acquainted his friends with his purpose, they were greatly affected, exceedingly lamented he should propose so hazardous a journey, and could not bear the thoughts of his departure. After several conferences upon his intention, Elbran his steward, a man of good character and an excellent lawyer, determined to expostulate with him, and try to dissuade him from his intended pilgrimage.
