Publisher's Synopsis
Tennessee is home to the Ocoee River, one of the top white water recreational rivers in the nation. It was also the site of an Olympic white water canoe/kayak competition in 1996. The southeastern state also has a long history of music, as the Jubilee Singers of Fisk University were responsible for introducing the tradition and plaintive beauty of the Negro spiritual. The tradition later inspired other African-American musical styles. The singers raised funds for the university during the 1870s.
