This volume details scientific pornography during the long nineteenth century. Though there is little overlap between pornography and sexual science currently, in the past pornographers played up scientific credentials to reassure readers while the state used the ambiguity between categories to censor information about birth control and sexual nonconformity. This volume provides evidence from the mid-century years during which time many of the main producers of pornography were affiliated with anthropology, geography, bibliography, and medicine. This volume includes materials related to the Cannibal Club and its members. It also situates the collection of Henry Spenser Ashbee and his bibliographic records in the period.
