This is the latest version of ‘Zebras Spell Really Well, Phonics and Spelling Rules’ to appear since it was first published and reviewed favourably in 2014. It is an A4 sized ring-bound workbook containing 90 worksheets designed to steadily teach spelling rules to children who have thus far found acquiring literacy skills demanding. The writer is an experienced tutor and assessor of dyslexic children. The worksheets teach: alphabetical awareness, letter sounds, small words but long vowel sounds, CVC words, assimilations, initial blends, capital letter sounds, Magic E words, when to use, er’, ‘ir’ and ‘ur’, silent first letters, question words, ‘W’ changes the sound of ‘a’ to ‘o’ and ‘ar’ to ‘or’, question words, hard and soft ‘C’ and ‘G’, plurals, silent internal ‘T’ and ‘D’, collective nouns, compound nouns and far more . The worksheets include illustrations of the words taught and the tasks include writing sentences and short stories and filling in missing words in sentences from a list of taught words. There are also quizzes and templates of flashcards of initial blends. The cumulative multi-sensory approach allows each child to assimilate the facts steadily at their own pace and they become proud of the work in their book and are eager to press on with it.
