The four chief protagonists of this tale set in Italy and Mexico are searching for meaning and purpose in their lives. Each person is of different origin and their quests take place against the backgrounds of Catholicism, traditional Mexican indigenous beliefs, agnosticism and atheism. Their individual searches begin in Italy and arrive at vastly different and unexpected outcomes in Mexico-be it in gratification, in fulfillment, in tranquility, or in tragedy. Each of them is in some way cast by fate into surprising and unpredicted new lives.
