Armed with the certainty that they could no longer tolerate city life, Mike and Laura (age 60), struck out in search of the perfect place to build a direct gain passive solar home in rural southern Colorado. Finding the perfect perch for solar exposure was a top priority, but finding a place with pristine mountain views was also essential. In 2014 they sold their nice suburban home in Fort Collins, Colorado and headed south to build on their lot with spectacular views of the Spanish Peaks in the foothills west of Walsenburg. Here I share our unique experience, building solar from the footers up.
Mike ran this project with his expertise in solar engineering, while also following fire-resistance standards. The challenges were more than we ever imagined. The long-term rewards have been far beyond all expectations, as we now live out our retirement dream of solar self-sufficency.
