Publisher's Synopsis
The author recounts his life in the retail business in the west of Ireland from 1946 to 2000. The book also serves as a social history of the period. Kevin Duffy takes us from the first day he ever worked behind a counter at the age of eighteen, up to the end of the 20th century where he had become a merchant of some status.;At the start of his story, he describes how his rural community was affected by the advent of electricity and the mechanization of farming. This was at a time when the horse reigned supreme on land and the majority of young people in the area emigrated to England or the USA, or moved to Dublin. He documents the changes as generation succeeded generation, interspersed with the events of his personal life, the ups and downs of running his own business and stories about his hobbies of fishing, painting and travelling.
