John Beames was, by his own confession, 'an average, ordinary, middle-class Englishman' but gifted with an extraordinary natural command of the language. He went out to serve in India in 1858 and only retired from the subcontinent in 1893, spending his last years near Taunton in Somerset. This is his story.
