Publisher's Synopsis

Theatrical Reflections consists of essays on such plays as Hamlet, Leonce and Lena, Curse of the Starving Class, The Birthday Party, The Knight of Olmedo, and Androcles and the Lion in addition to reviews of productions of The Servant of Two Masters, Yerma, The Threepenny Opera, Caligula, and Wings, among other works. The author's focus in his essays is on dramatic analysis that ultimately can be of benefit to directors, designers, and even actors - that is, with analysis of character, action, language, and setting that can be translated into viable concepts for theatrical production. In the case of reviews, of course, he is concerned with evaluating the actual concepts behind various theatrical productions. Most of the plays considered here are regularly produced, and it is the goal of this book to make some contribution to their future staging.
