Pizer provides criticism from a full range of interpretive approaches to illuminate the novel that permanently altered the images of warfare in American literature. Twenty-five essays make up this comprehensive, chronologically arranged collection, including reviews that appeared when the novel was first published, works written since the 1950's, and two original essays. Writers such as William Dean Howells, Edwin H. Caady and R. W. Stallman are represented. Several essays address major scholarly concerns such as the validity of a religious reading of the novel and whether Crane's uncut draft is a better text than the first published edition.
