In times of armed conflict, people hunger for reports from the battlefront, and journalists put their lives at considerable risk to keep the public informed. War correspondents have covered every American war. During the American War of Independence (1775-1783), reports were handwritten and delivered by messengers on horseback. Over 200 years later, during Operation Iraqi Freedom, reporters went into battle with the troops. Viewers could watch the war in real time. But does this threaten the military's need for secrecy?
