When an important, politically sensitive, painting is kidnapped in Rome, life takes a sharp, downward turn for Flavia di Stefano, acting head of the Italian Art Theft School. Armed with instructions to retrieve the painting without national embarrassment, Flavia turns to her old mentor, General Taddeo Bottando, for help. Meanwhile, her husband, the English art historian Jonathan Argyll, embarks upon his own investigation. As a gift to Bottando, he decides to establish the origins of a small Renaissance painting, an Immaculate Conception. For both Argyll and Flavia, the search for truth reveals some shocking secrets and leads them straight into the path of some highly dangerous enemies.
