Charleston, 1780. After years of war Hester Mackay and her Aunt Kizzy have to take lodgers into their mansion, to make ends meet. One of them is the English black marketeer, Benjamin Blake. As time passes, Hester's brother George dies, and Aunt Kizzy becomes bankrupt. Gratefully Hester accepts Benjamin's proposal of marriage. But storekeeper Carter Lois warns Hester that her new husband has already killed two wives. Is Benjamin behind the mysterious accidents which begin to befall Hester?
