When he is invited to Sir Walter Raleigh's country estate to join the gathering of a secret society known as the School of the Night, Dr Simon Forman readily agrees. But trouble soon follows him there culminating in a false accusation of murder. The Royal College of Physicians, who've always mistrusted Simon's unconventional practises, are only too willing to throw him into the Counter Gaol. Forman knows he's innocent, and it's clear that someone must be out to make mischief of the most serious nature for him. But who could hold such a poisonous grudge against him?
