In 1824 Fort Vancouver was established as a fur
trading post of the British Hudson Bay Company.
On June 15, 1846 the signing of the Oregon Treaty led to the United States taking full control of the area.
Eleven years later on January 23, 1857 the City of
Vancouver became the first incorporated city in the state of Washington.
Today Vancouver is the fourth largest city in the state with a population of 169,000 and is the largest suburb of Portland, Oregon.
