When we last saw Ael t'Rllaillieu (at the end of The Romulan Way) she rescued Dr Leonard McCoy from the very Senate Chamber where he was to be executed, stole the Sword in the Empty Chair - the ultimate symbol of Romulan tradition and power - right in front of the outraged Romulan Senate, and fled into Federation space, leaving destruction (and more than a few harsh words) in her wake.
The Romulan Star Empire must show their enemies that such an attack has dire consequences, and they must recover the sword at any cost. Their envoys to the Federation will demand Ael's extradition - and if diplomacy fails, they will orchestrate a string of events to trap the Klingons and the Federation in open war. Ael's life or death, and the way she plays her part in the game, will now directly affect the lives or deaths of millions.
