Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from The Zulu in Three Tenses: Being a Forecast of the Zulu's Future in the Light of His Past and His Present

Written originally for the perusal of friends, I have somewhat reluctantly consented to the publication of this little book with the object of securing, if possible, the consideration of a phase of this Native Question not often advanced, viz. That wherever there are rights there must be obligations, so that if we claim the right to control we must be prepared to dis charge the obligation to improve.

Whilst painfully sensible of the absence of any literary merit in it, I think it may fairly claim the merit of looking at the subject from a standpoint seldom, if ever, taken before; not the standpoint of the farmer, whose objective, very naturally, is plenty of cheap labour; nor the standpoint of the missionary, who is gene rally supposed, and with much truth, to concern himself more with the other life than the one that now is. I have tried to look at the subject from the standpoint of what is just to both parties, feeling assured that the right is always the best, whether it be financially.
