Nikita, the only one of all Brekhonnov's servants who was not intoxicated, came out to put the horses to. Nikita was sober on this day, although he had been a drunkard, but since the day before Lent, when he had drunk up his leather boots and his poddjowka, (a sleeveless cloak), he had vowed never to drink again and had kept his vow for two months in the face of the temptation of seeing the quantity of brandy which was consumed during the first two days of the fete.
