His second son, john, born at Germantown, May 27 1798, married, in 1827, harriet pauli, daughter of Rev. Philip Reinhold Pauli and Anna Elizabeth Musch, of Reading. The family of Pauli is an ancient one. The first of the name of whom we have any record is that of Hans Pauli who was burgess of Schwerin about the middle of the sixteenth century. His son, Simon Pauli, was professor of theology and superintendent at Rostock, in Mecklenburg, in 1570, while in succes sive generations we have Henry of Rostock physician and first public teacher of medicine at Ros tock; Simon Pauli, a noted physician of Rostock, who married Elizabeth Fabricius, daughter of the emi nent, Jacob Fabricius, physician of Rostock; Oliger Pauli, a noted man in his day; Philip Pauli, physician: to Christian VII. Of Denmark; Rev. Ernst Ludwig Pauli, an eminent divine of Magdeburg, Prussia, and a graduate of the University of Halle; Rev. Philip Reinhold Pauli, a native of Magdeburg.
