They stretched their necks and lowed, and the heavy vibrating diapason overcame even the roar of the lions returning full-fed to their lairs. From a rise near by they would have looked like a spreading dark sluggish flow. They were small, plump, gentle cattle with humps of fat above their shoulders. Their herders drove them to the pastures ap pointed, and there all day they fed in compact bodies, shimmering in the hot heat mirage like varicoloured patches against the low hills.
