With regard to the heights given in the tables, a few words are necessary to explain how far they are to be relied upon. All of them were determined by means of an aneroid barometer, by Negretti and Zambra, kindly lent to me by Mr. Satow, and graduated from 81 to 21 inches. In every case I noted the reading in inches as well as the time, and whenever we remained an hour or more in one place I took the reading at the end as well as at the beginning of our stay. At night I usually took two readings, one immediately on entering the tea-house, and another later in the evening, about 8 or 9 o'clock; whilst in the morning I took only one, except occasionally.
