Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from The South African Question: A Lecture on the Transvaal and Its System of Government, With Some of the Abuses of Power Which Have Led to the Present War in South Africa

When the British Emancipation Act came into force in Cape Colony, December 1, 1834, the Boers held nearly forty thousand slaves, and although Britain paid them fifteen mil lions of dollars for the release of their slaves, they were not content, but were still bent on the business of slave holding. Pieter Retief, their leader, stated in his manifesto that the abolition of slavery was one of the reasons why his band was leaving the colony.
