We had agreed with Merk to meet together in the spring at the residence of Madame La Roche, at Coblentz. I had sent my baggage to Frank fort; and such articles as I might stand in need of on my journey were embarked on the Lahn. I passed along the banks of that fine river, so rich in agreeable and varied prospects. Accustomed to observe the picturesque beauties of the country, eagerly dwelt on every object that appeared before me. I by turns admired the wood-covered rocks, the summits of the hills gilded by the rays of the sun, the castles crown ing the heights, and the horizon vaguely bounded by the distant blue mountains.
