In the Spring of 1778 the forts which had been erected at Huntington and Brookhaven were ordered to be de stroyed much to the dismay of the Inhabitants of Long Island who were thereafter harassed by raiding parties of the Americans coming from the Connecticut shore. The Ist and 3rd battalions then encamped near New town, L.I.
